Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMECHE)
– Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Obtain your masters without taking time off work

The course is available to study part-time, through online distance learning, meaning you don’t have to take time off work to complete your masters. The course is designed to give you the flexibility to study at a time and place most suitable for you, while receiving support and guidance from our expert online tutors.

Through the combination of online distance learning and work-based learning, you can achieve the academic qualification and professional development required as evidence in your application for chartered engineer (CEng) status.

Before you start the programme, please contact the professional body or engineering institute you are registered with to seek their confirmation that this programme is a suitable pathway to engineering chartership for your particular circumstances. They will also be able to help you to source a suitable mentor to aid you in your professional development, a required element of this programme.

The list of professional bodies can be found on the Engineering Council website.

Mentoring from experienced chartered engineers

Professional development is an important part of his programme, involving mentoring and support from an experienced Chartered Engineer. You are required to source a suitable mentor via the Engineering Institute you are registered with, or via your workplace. Mentors can fulfil two separate roles, a workplace mentor can advise on technical and business suitability in your approach, whereas a mentor who is a Chartered Engineer, will ensure you are meeting all of the competencies to a suitable level to support your application to become a Chartered Engineer.

A three-phased approach

There are three phases to this online distance learning course:

Phase 1: Entry gateway

This comprise a professional development audit (PDA) of your education, qualifications, experience, and competencies to date, and a reflective summary.

Phase 2: Study programme

This is the individual study programme that matches your PDA against professional body/Engineering Council requirements.

Phase 3: Exit gateway

This consists of either a reflective summary or an engineering project depending on skills and needs. It also includes a viva voce (an oral examination). Appropriately qualified academic and industrial tutors will work with you and your employer to design a unique programme tailored to your work situation.

Read the video transcript:

Hi, my name is Dr Justin Steele-Davies I’m the academic lead for engineering at the University of Derby Online Learning.

I’d like to talk to you today about the MSc in Professional Engineering. This programme was set up in collaboration with the Engineering Council to support engineers who are in the workplace but don’t necessarily have a high level qualification and for them to be able to demonstrate their skills at masters level and get a further qualification and work towards chartered engineering status.

So on the programme, what you’ll do is use your professional engineering skills and competencies and demonstrate those against the UK specific engineering competencies so that you can show that you are meeting or newly meeting those set standards.

The other thing we work on is engineering research into technical subjects and, actually, when we’ve had projects which work around work-based projects, the students have been able to demonstrate that their projects have an impact on the businesses that they work for and this in many cases had led to many people getting promoted or had different projects given to them that have changed their status within the work place. And that’s actually a really exciting opportunity for the students that I work with on the programme so, if you want to find out more, go to and look at the courses that we have available.
